Blog Journal #5

Before this class, I had never even heard of Diigo. However,  I have come to learn that it is truly an amazing, unique tool to use while online! It took me a few times of messing around with it to finally figure out what I was doing, but now that I know, I love it! My favorite part about Diigo is that is is a part of your Chrome account, so when you bookmark and annotate a website on one computer, those notes will be there no matter what computer you're on! Furthermore, I love that you can highlight a part of an article on a website that you find important or interesting, and then add your own little comment or note so you can reference it later! It is also nice that if you're in a group, your groupmates can access your comments and notes as well! The only aspect of Diigo that I do not necessarily love is the formatting of its website. Being someone who is not tech-savvy, I find it a bit confusing when trying to navigate around their website.

In regard to blogging, I have really enjoyed it! I have always debated starting a blog but have never made that final move to actually create one. This class forced me to make that jump, and while I am blogging about things I wouldn't be blogging about if it were my own, personal blog, I am still enjoying the experience. The only part I do not like about blogging is the fact that our topics are picked out for us and that we have a minimum sentence length. However, at the same time, I understand that those things need to be set as this is a class we are all needing to pass and not just some fun thing we are all doing as a hobby. During the blogging process, I have learned that it is actually relatively easy to create a blog! For some reason, I was under the impression that it was difficult and time-consuming to create one. Perhaps that was my mind's way of making up a valid excuse as to why I never created one before now.

I think a great Web 2.0 tool that I would like to use when I am teaching is Skype. As a Professor and just due to my love of travel, I want to attend many conferences and travel all over the world expanding my knowledge of Literature. However, as I will have classes to teach, Skype would be an amazing tool for me to still have class while I am away from campus! Through Skype, I could not only lecture to my students, but I could hold conversations with them as it would not be pre-recorded. We would all be interacting together at the same time, just from different locations. This could also be great if one of my students was out of town or sick and could not make it to class as they could simply log in to Skype and attend class from wherever they are! Obviously, guidelines would need to be set for how often and when/why students would need to use Skype to "attend" lecture so as to avoid all of my students merely using Skype as a way of never leaving their beds. Check Skype out for yourself here! Skype

  1. Skype is a really great tool, especially for a teacher on the go! It is free and accessible but also an awesome way to connect with students in a live setting.

  2. Skype is a great Web 2.0 tool! My senior year of high school I had to do an interview via Skype in order to earn a scholarship! It was an easy way to talk to the group of people who chose the scholarship recipients.
